Why You Can’t Visit — and Why That’s a Good Thing
At Piedmont Parrots, our birds are raised in a private, closed aviary inside our home—not in a pet store with constant foot traffic. While we understand the desire to visit in person or choose a bird on-site, our no-visitor policy is one of the key reasons our birds are healthier, better raised, and safer than many you’ll find in typical retail environments.
🦠 Biosecurity: Protecting Birds From Illness
Birds don’t have the same protections that puppies or kittens do. While dogs get vaccines to guard against common canine diseases, vaccinations are not available for common avian diseases. That means their only defense is a clean, carefully controlled environment.
Many avian diseases are highly contagious—and completely invisible. Just visiting another bird owner, attending a bird expo, or picking up supplies at a pet store can track in bacteria, viruses, or fungal spores on your hands, shoes, or clothing. Some of these—like avian polyomavirus, psittacosis, PBFD, or aspergillosis—can be fatal, especially for young or unweaned birds.
In our home-based aviary:
-
No one brings in outside germs from other pets or bird facilities
-
No strangers handle or breathe near our birds
-
All breeder birds are disease tested for common avian viruses and bacteria—an added expense we gladly take on to ensure healthy, thriving babies
🏡 Home-Based Aviary, Not a Pet Store
Piedmont Parrots is a small, in-home aviary—not a public showroom or storefront. Our birds are raised inside our living space, which includes an open floor plan and plenty of freedom for the birds to fly and explore.
From a practical standpoint, in-person visits aren’t just a health risk—they’re also not realistic. Most of our birds are fully flighted and won’t sit calmly on a stranger’s hand. Having unfamiliar people enter the space disrupts their routine and causes stress. It’s not an ideal way to evaluate a bird—and it’s certainly not how we want to introduce them to potential homes.
Instead of in-person visits, we offer:
-
Recent photos and videos of each available bird
-
Detailed descriptions of their personality and behavior
-
Ongoing updates by email or text
We’re always happy to answer questions and help match you with the right fit. Our top priority is producing healthy, well-raised birds—and maintaining a visitor-free, biosecure environment is a major part of how we do that.
Thank you for your understanding and your trust.
